There is no resisting the urge to write something about Twitter
Twitter is still the hottest thing going, and the odd thing is that I have become something of a convert. After a long time, I got to place where I realized that it is useful and has different uses for different people.
For myself, there are people in the entrepreneurial ecosystem that (1) have data and information inputs that I don’t normally have and (2) can point me to them with their tweets. For example, I like to follow what is going on in the cloud computing world but I don’t have the bandwidth to pursue it the way certain entrepreneurs and VCs do. Some of them, thankfully, write tweets that point to information that I might, or might not, find of interest. In any event, I get enough in 140 characters so I can decide to pursue or not.
My own tweets, infrequent though they are, tend to be of this sort. I run across a lot of legal stuff that is not normally part of an entrepreneur’s reading list (or a VC’s for that matter). Nevertheless, if you follow me, you will get a "digest" of what a lawyer, who practices in the space, sees. I typically try to give the gist of an article or event and provide a link. You can decide if you want to follow up. My tweets on the subject of changes in Delaware law around director liability and indemnification might be a good example.
There are many other good uses for tweets, and I suspect I will have some thoughts on them from time to time. One of the astronauts working on the Hubble telescope was tweeting, which I thought was cool. Ashton Kutcher reaching 1 million followers struck me as an example of the mindless, but his fans probably like it.
In any event, one downside of the some of the people that I follow is that they sometimes (more often than they should) get sidetracked into the narcissistic. When this happens you get tweets from really smart people, such as Rands, with comments such as " I like pickles." Even Ashton’s fans don’t care. It is this sort of narcissism that makes people guffaw at Twitter.
All in though, Twitter has serious potential, and I for one, hope they can figure out how to make money at it.
